Riverview Seed Company
Hawman Farms is a family-owned and -operated business, now entering its fourth generation. The farm began in the Willamette Valley in Western Oregon. In 1982, Phil and Mike Hawman relocated the farm to the Columbia Basin, overlooking the Columbia River. Potatoes, corn, and alfalfa were staple crops throughout the 1980s and 90s. In 1985, cool season grasses were planted to help diversify the farming operation. Grass seed fit seamlessly into the crop rotation and production expanded. The business further expanded in 1995 to include a seed cleaning facility.
Center-pivot irrigation from the Columbia River allows Hawman Farms to produce any cool season grasses requested by seed companies. Perennial rye grass is currently the main crop grown on the farm.
The seed cleaning facility can clean approximately 18 million pounds of grass seed per year. Using automatic packaging lines and state-of-the-art equipment, the facility has become a world-wide grass seed supplier. The facility was one of the first seed companies to be accepted into the International Seed Testing Association's rules; a set of standardized methods and definitions for seed testing, sampling, and reporting results.
At Hawman Farms, we strive to do our best and look for ways to continually improve operations.
